Hi,

I made my water change last week on my 20 gallon tank with 15 watt light.
The tank is now cloudy with brown algae on the walls. I went to aquarium
shop and he said that i may have distroyed a lot of bacteria in my last
water change. He suggested that i buy CYCLE. But since the PH of my tank is
not changing (PH 6.5) I think the cloudy water is due to algae spores???

My tank has about 2 large java ferns, 1 amazon sword that is not doing well
and is slowly dying, java moss
and 2 other stem plants. I have a DIY CO2 and light my tank 10-12 hours a
day.

Can brown algae boom cause cloudy water, should i remove the DIY CO2.

I think you need more light. 15w is not enough for 20 gallon tank. YOu
need at least 2 15w lights.

What color is your cloud?

If its white it must be bacteria, just leave it. It will go off on its own.
If its green add KNO3 and keep your NO3 level between 5 and 10.

Cloudy water is white. After doing few research on the internet i think the
problem is bacteria boom. Two things that i did and i believe had caused
this. 1. I had a new filter installed, 2. I moved some plants therefore
gravel
was stired.
I am taking following precautions.
1. Changed 20% water and removed any decaying food and plants from water.
Will again change water in about 1
day. The last change did reduce cloudiness of the water.
2. Reduded feeding to fish.
3. need to add aquarium salt ( i dont have any). Can i add table salt.

No don't add table salt, aquarium salt is cheap enough to not justify using
table salt

STOP.

Decaying ANYTHING is always bad. Some bottom feeders eat some things, but if you
have "decaying food and plants" then remove them immediately and FEED LESS!
(what your fish can eat in 2-3 minutes, twice a day).

Salt is a mysterious cure-all for many fish ailments. It probably helps some and
probably does nothing for others. But it does NOTHING positive for plants. DO
NOT ADD SALT unless you have an extremely well thought out reason for doing so
TO BENEFIT YOUR FISH!
