Good fertiliser?

Can anybody recommend a good fertiliser available in the U.K Currently I'm using API leafzone and API root tabs, not doing a bad job, but I feel it could be better.

Thanx

You could try Ferreal and Floreal obtainable mail order from Anglia Aquatics (check out their website).
Quite honestly, it's far more rewarding (and cheaper) to make your own. Start with PMDD
http:://www.csd.net/~cgadd/aqua/75g.htm

and develop on from there, depending on how your plants respond. I get all my stuff either from the Garden Centre or the Chemist.

Thanx for the reply Paul. So what do you buy from the garden centre and chemist? Would be interesting to make my own and as you say, cheaper!

My tanks are a south american theme with Discus, lightly planted and a general community, heavily planted.

Right,
first of all read everything you can about PMDD (poor man's dosing drops). Chuck Gadd's website is first class. Also read the original Sears and Conlin paper on fertilisation http://www.cam.org/~tomlins/algae.html, also http://www.tropicalfishcentre.co.uk/pmdd.htm.

When you have digested this information, you will realise that you need the following :-

Potassium nitrate (chemist)
Potassium sulphate (garden centre)
Epsom salts (chemist or garden centre)
Trace element mixture (I use Chempak Trace Element mix from larger garden centres or mail order fromhttp://www.longwoodgardencentre.co.uk/acatalog/info.html

A lifetime's supply of the above will cost you about £15 . less than you would pay for a couple of months supply of commercial stuff.

Initially follow the Sears/Conlin method closely, making up the solutions using Chuck Gadd's calculator as a guide. It's not at all complicated.

The method is almost guaranteed to work. After a few months you will feel confident enough to vary the concentrations according to your own set-up. You may even want to add a little phosphate (superphosphate from any garden centre- £2 for a millennium's supply) stand back and watch the growth explosion!!!

Good luck

Paul
