How long to leave lights on?
 

This is a topic i've never seen come up, but I'm sure it has at some point.
I'm leaving my 160w (4 40w bulbs) on for 12 hrs a day off for eight or so
over a 55 gallon. Is this too little or too much? Can anyone elaborate on
this? Plants right now are crypts, Spirella, a melon sword and a bunch of
java fern.

That's only 18 hours in your day.

Usually recommend 10-12 hours per day.
