Default Eheim Ecco Problem - Need Urgent Help!

Here's the skinny:

I setup my Eheim Ecco 2231 canister filter last night and it was running
quite well. As a pre-caution I put the filter in a bucket... just in case.
Well... I awoke this morning to discover the "just in case". The bucket had
over a litre of water in it.

It doesn't appear that the water dripped from the tubing or where the tubing
is connected to the joints, though it could've happened. I've stopped the
filter and pulled it apart just to inspect (the DIY in me) and see if
everything seemed kosher. Everything seemed okay so I'm about to empty the
bucket and run the filter again... in the bucket .

Does anyone have any ideas as to what could've caused this water to appear
in the bucket? Does anyone here own an Ecco?

This filter needs to be up and running ASAP so I'd greatly appreciate your
prompt responses.

Hi there,

Sometimes the sealing rubber ( o-ring? not familliar with the ecco, just
with eheim in general) will leak somewhat when you just start using the
filter. Use some vaseline (acid free) on it, it will help to seal. In time
the seal should improve...
(sorry for the bad english, hop it comes across)

As with any cannister if you don't get the seal quite right on the lid the
thing can/will leak. Chances are that by pulling it apart & putting it back
together you've solved the problem. Only other thing is that if it is a
brand new filter, did you grease the seal?

I did not grease the seal. No where in the instructions booklet does it
mention that. Interesting... Did you take a look at the picture I posted
to see where I indicated the water could escape if I tilted the canister?
Problem in my city is that I don't think any of the LFS sell Eheim
products - lucky me

I'll take it to one of the LFS and see if anyone has any ideas before I go
and buy another brand. I'll also buy some vaseline and try that as well.
Is that a common thing... the Vaseline on the seal of a new canister?

My Eheim Pro cannisters both came with a small tube of vaseline for exactly
this purpose - suggest you check the packaging to make sure you didn't get
some too!

I have an eheim classic-type (not a classic, but similar, round, and not
an ecco) and that didn't come with such stuff. I didn't grease the
seal, and to date haven't had leaks... I do try and make sure it's
seated right, and run in a bucket for a day or so after maintenance just
to be sure though - had a leaky tap once, don't want a repeat of that!

With a round one as you close it first at one side then at the other
you are more likely to leak...

Entering the lid vertically can avoid this !
Also putting the o-ring as high as possible with some torque
to maintain it high as you release it.

Well the lid can only be opened simultaneously. It opens by moving the
handle which doubles as a water primer and seal lock. I wasn't aware that
the o-ring (sealing ring) could go any higher than it already is? In the
interim I just bought an AquaClear so the tank can continue to be filtered.
That said, I'm not giving up on this 2231 Eheim filter as I really believe
that Eheim's are great. I've had several that worked smoothly. I think
it's a very small problem. Like everyone seems to say, I think it's
something to do with the o-ring which I believe is just a slight problem
that can be rectified.

Mine is an old 2213 with no "automatic" lid (neither priming)...
The lid as two diameters the o-ring has to sit at the very position
on the smaller where it touches the larger.

When you close by hand you feel when you are not simultaneous.
Perhaps your handle prevent you of feeling it.
I never did use grease but I had leaks once every 10 closings.
You should prevent the O-ring to roll when you close.
