Hello all,

I have a fantastic pothos in my office hanging near my 48G aquarium.
I've started new plants with a clipping and water. I wondered if it
would be safe to drop the end of a pothos clipping in the aquarium near
the heater opening to start a new plant. Call it an experiment, can the
pothos get everything it needs from tank water and my big concern, will
it give off anything toxic to the fish? I know the calcium oxalate
crystalsit's are toxic to dogs and cats, but a Google search found at
least one list for fish and pothos wasn't listed as toxic.

The details. I have about 28-31" of fish depending on if you count
snails (2 ea. 5" Balas, 5" blue prawn that thinks it's king, 2 ea. 1"
Skunks, 1.5" Tiger Barb, 5" Pleco, 2" CAE, 2" Female Convict Cichlid
only territorial at feeding time, 3ea. 1" BM Snails)and feed them a
total of about 2tsp of mixed flake, foating and shrimp pellets once daily.

It's a planted tank with wisteria, amazon swords, camboa, telanthera and
a big thing that I forget the name of with 8-12" leafs that looks like
an onion or bamboo! About 5-10% of the wisteria and telanthera is
happliy floating free on the surface. I have laterite substrate, home
built CO2 (1b/sec), 4tsp Leafzone 1x/wk, Topfin 60 w/o carbon, 60W
Aquaglow light, avg water temp of 84F and set to 80F (live in Arizona so
84F is monitarially reasonable ambient house temp).

I've recently dropped the other 30W of light I had so I can have a
slower growing lower light tank, but do have a western exposure with
strong but diffused afternoon sunlight. I'm also trying to go away from
the former 25% water changes weekly and have been simply topping off as
needed. I'm working to achieve a balance between the fish and plants.

BTW, yes I'm aware I should have friends for the Tiger Barb. We've been
recovering from an outbreak of velvet and ich and lost his friends. When
you're treating ich only at first..not ultimately a good thing. Since
it's been a month since we cured that and everythings looking good with
chemestry, I'm thinking of picking up 5 more small Tigers and possibly a
male friend for my Convict. I would increase food to about a tablespoon
a day with the addition of these.

Any and all advice taken regarding either fauna or flora. I'll try to
be no more than mildly insulted if you call me a moron.

I've got a friend whose wife placed some pothos in his betta vase in his
bathroom... never noticed... 2 weeks later she noticed that it was
flourishing.... He said, yep, cuz I keep feeding the betta that is in that
bowl... she was surprise because she never looked t see if there WAS a fish
in it...

I have been growing a pothos with its roots in an aquarium for the
last six months at least. It has developed a huge root mass going all
the way down into the gravel. At first it was in a 20-gallon hexagonal
tank with a paradise fish in it. I later moved the plant to a
108-gallon tank because the roots were taking up too much space in the
smaller tank. The paradise fish is still fine and so are the fish in
the big tank. There does not seem to be any adverse effect.

I tried a few other plants and found that Syngonium podophyllum and
Hemigraphis colorata also grow well in the same situation. I have one
of each with their roots in a 10-gallon quarantine tank in which I am
presently raising two panchax babies who were born in the big tank
about two weeks ago.

I have always heard the bigger the tank the easy it is to take care of. I like my 2 smaller tanks because i can have one tank with aggressive fish and one with committee fish.
