Default Here's the main Anna's male in my yard

He's a feisty little rascal. His gorget feathers haven't come in fully but
he runs most rivals off until today when he just got outnumbered.

I've orten wondered why himans are so cunfused on this issue - in the
animal kingdom, as we see here, it is invariably the male which is
colorful and flashy. WHy are we so determinedly different? I've never
been able to find a reason that actually held water.

'was not always so in Western society. Over the ages, there were periods when
men were the peacocks and this is still the case in some parts of the world.

Mom used to sit near the feeders with a garden hose and squirt the
aggressive ones that ran the others off. ;-)

I need to find one of the prints that she took of the hummingbirds
around the 3 feeders we had when we lived in California. They were 1
liter each and she had to fill them at least twice per day!

The greedy little buggers would hover in front of the kitchen and living
room windows when the feeders ran out...

They were such a joy! I've had trouble attracting them here.

I love them so and have really been enjoying your posts!

This little dude looks like he was about to attack your camera. G

Hahaha! They are lots of fun. Thanks for the kind comments.

During the past week or two there has been a series of pics on the internet
showing a gal feeding up to 5 hummers out of a red plastic cap. That's more
together in one spot than I've ever seen before. It sounds like your mom
had a lot more than that!

I got that via e-mail. I think it was on a migration path?

We counted up to 30 birds around the three feeders at any one time.
That is one of the 35mm pictures I need to find and scan.

There were 3 big oak trees nearby that they used to nest in, and we used
to watch the mating dances. :-)

The rubythroats did a fairly short arch, maybe 5 to 6 ft. across,
(they'd "swoop" back and forth in front of a perched hen) and the Anna's
had a MUCH bigger arc! 10' or more.

They are amazing and pretty smart too!

We also had some Rufus. We were on a migratory flight path in the
greater Mojave foothills.

Orioles would sometimes come thru and "drink" from the hummingbird
feeders. We never got pics of those tho'. Bright orange and black or
yellow and black birds.
