Typically, the peak of my garden is the second week of July. I am fond
of daffodils and so they bloom early in the Spring. My property also
has a lot of ancient (well, 40-years-old) flowering cherry, azalea,
viburnum and spiraea, and they cover April and May nicely. Over the
years I have also deliberately tried to put in things that bloom in
the doldrums of August and September. The problem is that I still have
a gap from about Memorial Day through most of June. Here are some of
what is out now, however.

One plant that I have tried to use in this seasonal gap is peonies. I
put these in a couple of years ago, and they are starting to look
pretty good now. They opened yesterday for the first time, and this
flower is just about perfect. I think I'll start expanding this peony
planting. I've got some old ones elsewhere on my property that are not
very happy where they are, and I may be able to transplant them. I
have done that successfully in the past, but you do need to be
prepared to dig down at least 2-feet to get them.
