Flocks of Phlox, in fact.

My Phlox paniculata is now in full bloom, and really helping out the
dog-days garden. These were purchased as plants 3-4 years ago, but
they are looking better this year than ever before. As I recall, these
were "Bright Eyes".

Somebody, deer I think, like to nibble on these when they first come
up in the Spring, but that actually helps, because the early nibbling
makes them bushy and more floriferous.

William. In MT-NewsWatcher: "Edit" menu, "Preferences" sub menu, under
"Message Options" in the Preferences dialog, make sure that the setting
"Send with MIME" is left unchecked.

Otherwise to many (including this MT-NewsWatcher user) your post looks
like the above, only a lot, lot longer... Some will able to see what
you've posted but many will not, unless you turn MIME off in MT-NW for
posting.

Folks won't get to see your posts if they're too lazy (like me) to DL
them (as unknown content to disk) to a viewer. I discovered this for
myself the hard way, posting up JPEGs with MIME turned on and getting no
feedback, once I turned that off, things changed quickly ;-)

Flocks of Phlox, in fact.

My phlox leaves are always covered with a white powder - don't know if it's
a fungus or what but it's unsightly. The flowers are unaffected.

I'd pull them up but they were given to me by a neighbour who died last year
and it seems ungrateful. I just wish the hens would eat them but they don't!

That sounds like what they generically call "powdery mildew". I
haven't had a problem with it on my Phlox, but it does affect my Peony
and it is famous on Zinnia.

My understanding is that although it looks bad, it doesn't usually
hurt the plant. I have read that good ways to reduce instances of this
are full sun, good air circulation and clearing out dead leaves and
other Autumn debris. I also think that there are potions that are
supposed to deal with it too.

Yes, that's what I assumed it was.

It doesn't seem to. If the plants died I wouldn't mind ...

It only gets late sun in the evening. I half expected that to be the reason
:-)

Thanks,

Mary

Thanks, Travis, that's interesting, especially that it's host specific.

Funny though, we've had the wettest summer on record and masses of rain yet
the mildew is as healthy as ever!

I don't get any mildew on any other plant - in the open or under glass.

Mary
