I've read that putting vasaline on the feeder basket will help keep
those away.

Yes, but it's very bad for the hummers because they can bump
the feeder and get the vaseline on their feathers. Bad. Very bad.

Best thing is to get away from that type of feeder. See if you
can find a Hummzinger near you, or buy them online.

And read up on feeding hummers at http://www.hummingbirds.net/ .

Best site ever for hummers.
