for posting?

Have you tried IrfanView, Wendy? Tap the CTRL+S key when viewing a file
then make sure you tell it to save with the .jpg extension, then it
will present you with a dialog that asks the amount of compression to
employ for the file and you can select 85% for a nice looking .jpg with
out being overly sized. Other key combinations with that program:

CTRL+R to resize the image, make sure the Keep Aspect Ratio is checked.

CTRL+I to change information in the file, if you wanted to add anything
like your name or copyright notices. If you open John's file with the
IrfanView program and press CTRL+I you'll see where he placed his name
in there as the copyright notice. Not sure if he used IrfanView to do
all this, but if I were to bet, I'd bet he does.

CTRL+R and CTRL+L to rotate it left or right if the picture gets shown
sideways.

SHIFT+G presents a nice dialog box to change the brightness. I do not
mess with the rest of the things, although some nice effects exist to
make a border or whatever.

CTRL+S to save the file, you can change the name if you don't want to
over-write the previously existing file. You can select a different
file-type instead of changing the name, because a file with a different
extension is a file with a new name. IrfanView prompts if it's going to
over-write an existing file.

80% to 85% gives nicely sized files for jpg files while keeping the
image sharp. Play around with a few different files giving them new
names (make sure they're all in the same folder), then open one and
click the arrow buttons in IrfanView to browse and see how changing
the percentage affects the image.

Thanks ever so much Jim, for taking the time to explain. Yes Irfanview is
my favourite but I have never been a user of the Control Keys.
I was just curious as to what software posters use for editing images.
