I smelt my first bluebell last week - lovely!

I am also English. Not to be cantankerous but I thought a smelter was
something in industry like steel mills.

The past tense of "to smelt" is "smelted".
That of "to smell" is "smelt" but "smellit" in Scots of course.
The two words aren't related, it's just a coincidence.
