Weed of the Week: Himalayan Balsam (Impatiens glandulifera)

1 Attachment(s)
This week, a waterside weed for the larger garden (or river basin).

I. glandulifera is an annual plant: it grows from seed each spring and
dies in autumn. Its thumb-sized flowers vary from pale pink to a rich
madder-red and attract a variety of bees and other insects. The plant
has a pleasant distinctive balsam scent and has no spikes, hooks or
stings. The seed pods open explosively to scatter the seeds, making
this weed a favourite with small children.
