Weed of the week: Crassula helmsii
Please note: this is a picture of a pond. The water plantains in the
middle are about a foot high. Crassula helmsii is suitable for ponds and lakes of all sizes so long as there's fresh water less than three metres (10 feet) deep. It'll also grow out into your lawn. It comes from Australia and New Zealand and has many names, including the politically correct mouthfuls 'Australian swamp stonecrop' and 'New Zealand pygmyweed' and the more emotive 'Satanic stonecrop' and 'Devil's pondweed'. In Britain it's illegal to let it escape but until April 2014 perfectly legal to sell it. How's that for joined-up government?
