I was actually given this plant by a marine biologist as an oxygenator
for my new pond. It can cause large fluctuations in oxygen levels so is
not particularly good for this, but it's easy to grow so people have
spread it all over the world.
If anything disturbs the plant its fleshy stems and leaves break apart
into tiny pieces which can travel in moving water, on the feet of birds
and animals or in mud on your boots and tools. Wherever they touch down
they grow to refill the pond you've just cleared or start a new
infestation.
If you have a pond full of this stuff check your government's advice
before trying to get rid of it - it's very easy to make things worse.
