Weed of the week: Shepherd's purse (Capsella bursa-pastoris) [1/1]
Shepherd's purse is so called because the seed pods are shaped like a
flat empty bag and shepherds were poor. The "joke" dates at least from Roman times and survives in most Latin languages. This fine historic weed is not native to Britain but was introduced (probably among crop seeds) long before anyone kept records of weeds. You can find it in fields, streets and gardens in any cool or cold country: it's one of the world's 76 worst weeds of agriculture. It deserves a better picture, but here it is living in the gutter.
