Weed of the week: holly (Ilex aquifolium) [1/1]
1 Attachment(s)
Here are the flowers of the female holly tree. You can see the tiny
green ovaries which will ripen into red fruit about the size of a coffee bean. Very few holly trees have enough ripe fruit to look decorative, but don't be deceived - there'll be hundreds of seedlings. The distinctive shape of holly leaves makes the seedlings easy to recognise: pull them out as soon as you see them. If you need a prickly evergreen hedge make sure your hollies are male. Next week: ivy.
