bumper crop o' weeds...
Ahhh... spring has sprung, the sky is blue the breeze is balmy and we
have a bumper crop of weeds coming up in last year's garden plot. They seem to be two types of ground cover type weeds with little blooms..mostly white, some blue or violet color. Here is a photo of some of them. http://www.farmphoto.com/homestead/m....asp?mid=36173 Any expert weeders out there know what these are? We are in Zone 7, southeastern US. Thanks |

It's a bit hard to be sure from the picture, but the one with white flowers
looks like chickweed. For me it is a "winter weed"; it grows from fall through spring, even under the snow, or so it seems. It's an annual, and it sets prodigious numbers of seeds. It's best to catch it now, before it sets seed, and pull it up. It's not difficult to pull, especially if the ground is moist, and as it spreads quite a bit there's not as many plants to pull as it would seem at first glance. Don't worry if you miss a bit of root, it generally won't rebound in time to set seed again before summer, and by then it's toast. One of the easier weeds, IMO. The blue flowered one could be creeping speedwell. It's a perennial; you'll notice that it's bit more firmly rooted, but still not too much trouble to remove. One of those pronged dandelion weeders, or a big screwdriver, is handy to loosen the roots to avoid snapping them off. Cheers, Sue Zone 6, Southcentral PA "Doctoroe" wrote in message om... And young dandelion greens (unpesticized) make a tasty salad or lightly cooked
side dish. zemedelec |
