Unfortunately, the fastest growing trees are also the shortest lived, weedy, &
have weak wood, so you are always picking up broken dead branches. Have
patience. Some of the maples, not the overused Norway or silver maple, are
reasonably fast growing. You will be happier in the long run with good quality
trees, even if fewer of them. Ask your local extension agent.

You tell him, Iris.

This question is repeatedly asked and the answer is always the same.

The fastest growing trees are extremely weedy and are far more trouble than
they are worth.

Maybe this should be a FAQ?

Hmm, my brother-in-law one bought 2 trees advertised in TV Guide, guaranteed
to reach 30' in 2 years. They almost reached that and 2 years after that
they were dead. He found out that they were genetically altered. They grew
fast and died fast.

If you like green all year, you might want to think about bamboo. Not a
tree but can get tall - up to 60 feet and will SPREAD. There are two main
types - clumpers and runners. I like bamboo. Some hate it because it can
be invasive.

A wild elderberry tree (NOT a cultivar) easily grows to 15 feet in one
year. Then it slows down a lot, unless you decide to cut it down, in which
case it grows right back just as fast. Start with a three-footer or
five-footer in a 5 gallon container from a native plants specialist, just
so you know you have a well-developed root to start with. The trunks &
bigger branches are hollow but extremely hard even so, with lots of give
in a high wind, though if they ever did break off in the wind, it springs
back up the next year good as new. Other such fast-growers are far more
likely to snap off in the wind, & far less likely to grow right back.

Despite all the comments to the contrary, there are a number of perfectly acceptable and relatively long-lived trees which can put on growth at a pretty rapid rate, once established. Leyland cypress, Thuja 'Green Giant', liriodendron, paulownia, Lombary p
oplar and various willows can all achieve 3 or more feet
a year if given proper conditions. Various oak species, red and Norway maples, Fraxinus pennsylvanica, alder and sweet gums should grow a couple of feet a year. In tree growth, this is considered pretty darn fast. One doesn't have to wait forever for a eve
n a young tree to reach a reasonable size if care is
given to selection and growing conditions.

anyone who loves trees should be really thrilled with a book on them.
I wouldn't bother to say that sarcastically.

I have a Silver Dollar Eucalyptus tree that has grown about six feet per year for the last two years. Also California pepper trees at about five feet per year. I find both to be attractive trees. However they need to be planted in different places as th
ey have different characteristics. There are a lot of
considerations in tree selection. Speed of growth is low on my priority list.

I have better luck planting smaller trees. The small ones seem to catch up to the bigger ones in about three years.

Hi Pam - I agree with you. There are a number of fast-growing trees which
are notorious for breaking in storms, short-lives, etc, (silver maple and
some of the large poplars being good examples) but some, such as the tulip
poplar (liriodendron), giant sequoia, calocedrus, leland cypress and some
others are long-lived attractive trees which do not break easily.

If you have enough property, plant a mix of fast growers and slow growers -
some of the fast growers will die by age 25-40, but there will be lots of
beautiful long-lived trees maturing by that point. Just be sure that the
fast growers that you plant are not massive trees that will be hard to
remove when they kick the bucket.........A birch wouldn't be difficult to
remove, but a giant broad poplar is a massive tree, as is a full-grown
silver maple.

Birch trees are fast growers; 'Heritage' River Birch is beautiful. The next
tree I lose in the yard is going to be replaced by one.

Ash trees are also fast, hardy growers. A seedless variety certainly wouldn't
be weedy or messy.
