Growth on fig tree

My wife has just pointed out to me a growth that she thinks has been
there about a month. The ficus benjaminus is very healthy, green and
full, but on the trunk there is a growth about the size, shape, and
colour of a walnut. She is worried that it might be full of insects
or worse yet, spiders!

Any ideas?

Thanks,
Jim

It is some sort of gall. It is more likely to be caused by bacteria than
insects. I would cut it off.
