Substitute for Columnar Buckthorn in Zone 4a?
Being good citizens, we ripped out all our columnar buckthorns when
the state declared them persona non grata. Now we're looking for something to go in the back of the garden along the fence to replace them. I've looked around off and on over the winter but never found anything that looked like it would be anywhere near as low maintenance as the buckthorns (lop a few feet off the top every year and they were happy). Any suggestions for other compact, upright shrubs to take their place? We had a brief flirtation with Cornus Mas "Golden Glory", but I'm no longer sure it's a real Zone 4a survivor. -- Bert Hyman | St. Paul, MN | |
