Paghat,

You had a great write up a couple weeks ago about composting carnivore poop.
I don't know if you mentioned it but I'd been told that there's something
very dangerous for pregnant women about cat poop. Do you know anything about
that?

The hazard you are talking about is called toxoplasmosis. You are
right, there are different opinions on this issue. Toxoplasmosis is
named for the toxoplasma parasite. This parasite frequently lives in
cats, but also in other animals such as cows, pigs, chickens and
goats. The danger comes from infected cats excreting these too tiny
to see, egg-cysts in their poop. Humans can get infected if these
eggs get from your hands to your eyes, nose or food. These eggs can
come from undercooked meat, or from gardening (eggs can live a very
long time in moist soil).
You can have your cat's poop tested, or just to be on the safe side,
it's best for pregnant women not to handle kitty litter. (Or if you
have to, wear rubber gloves.)

Pregnant women shouldn't go anywhere near a catbox because of Toxoplasma.
A good hot compost kills the shed oocysts, but in the catbox they just
wait patiently to get stirred up in the dust & infect any cat owner. It
can cause spontaneous abortion. Just petting the cat can be dangerous, but
the catbox is a unique threat because people stick a scoop in it & stir it
around, or discard the contents carelessly with particles easily breathed
in.

There are many other zoonotic diseases one can get from the household dog
or cat, usually from direct contact with the animals, the risk is vastly
greater from petting & loving an animal than from composting poo. I
wouldn't worry too much about any of it, except anyone pregnant ought
really to insist someone other than herself change the cat's litter.

Toxoplasma gondii is not spread via respiratory route.

The safe alternative to that, for you single moms out there who are now
wondering what to do, is to simply change the box daily. If the oocysts
are not left around 24 hrs, they won't get a chance to sporulate. If they
do not sporulate, they are not infectious, and you have no cause for
concern.

Nevermind the fact that most cats aren't shedding toxo oocysts anyway,
unless the cat has an active infection, which only lasts about 2 weeks
after the initial infection...

Yep, they even cause birth defects. But if we can't do away with war,
which is presumedly our own doing hence within our species' power to end,
nor live without automobiles, which kill more of us even than war, well, I
wouldn't worry overmuch about death by kitty.
