Any plant with a lifespan longer than two years is considered a perennial,
although the term is usually applied to flowering plants with no permanent.

A perennial is any plant that lives more than two years and keeps coming up
year after year. There are thousands of different perennials. You will find
them in nurseries & catalogues.

Basically, perennial refers to something lasting many years. Contrast
this to annuals (plants that last only one yearly cycle, and biannual
(plants that generally grow the first year, bloom the second year, and
then die off.)

Perennials usually are the backbone of the home garden because you don't
need to replant them every year. However, overall, they aren't usually
as colorful as annuals. (Yes, there are plenty of exceptions.) You'll
often see annuals being sold as "color spots".

Usually when gardeners speak of perennials, they exclude shrubs, bushes,
trees, and other such plants, and tend to mean just those plants that
die-back, or are usually cut-back significantly. Where exactly one draws
the line here could make for a long debate.

It can also become confusing because in some climates a plant may be a
perennial, while in other climates it may be considered an annual.

In the most basic terms, a perennial is something you don't have to
replant or re-sow next year.

Perennial is a plant where some part of that plant remains alive throughout the
year. Be it roots, rhizomes, bulbs, etc. An annual grows, sets seed and dies
in the same year. No part of the annual remains alive, but can re-seed.

Yeah, that's what it turns out to be, but a less intimidating
reference is to do a search on "perennial" or "perennial plants" or go
to Dictionary.com and check "perennial.
