How do I get rid of that pesty onion grass?
I have these annoying clumps of onion grass that pop up randomly all over my
yard. Oftentimes when I try to pull them out they break at the soil level and the onion bulbs stay intact underground and regrow. They seem to be very hardy. Any suggestions on how to best get rid of them? |

That is the million dollar question.
What is a good way to permanently remove Allium vineale L. from the garden and lawn? The plant is also a serious pest in grain fields. Just digging the plants out doesn't work because there are always a few small bulbils left behind and it may even actually help the plant to spread. How do I get rid of that pesty onion grass?
We had a house in Los Angeles and they were everywhere. We dug the
bulbs and got rid of 95% of the problem. After another dig or two, they all but gone. That is just my experience, but of course it might depend on how old they were and how much they had spread beneath the surface, true. I read several years ago that a wax "weed bar" was about the only control that would stick to wild onion leaves long enough to kill it. At that time, they were available in the local garden center, but very expensive. Searching the web this morning only turned up Canadian references, and a mention of a Killex weed bar. It's easier to pull up wild onion/onion grass after a good soaking rain. I also notice that they only seem to grow up and flourish for two shortish periods in a summer season, and are very easy to mow. |

I made a pair of 2' wooden tongs and fastened sponges on the end. I dip the tongs in (extra strength) Roundup and go around the yard wiping the onion grass. It only takes about 15 minutes, then the onions are gone in a week. Otherwise just let them be and the summer heat will kill them back (for another year). |

That will only kill the plants that have leafed out, not the many bulbils
that the plants produce. The bulbils will sprout later and you will need to start all over again. The problem is that not all the bulbils will sprout at the same time. Phisherman wrote in message ...
