Default Dogwood Tree Roots

What should I expect the (maximum) depth of my Dogwood tree's roots to
be ?

I became aware yesterday that the tree is very close to the septic
system overflow pit at my house, and am concerned about roots drinking
the darkwaters.

I live on Long Island, NY, where soil is shallow top soil, loam and
sand.

Thanks.
