Take one stem and bring it to the ground, clip off the leaves and bury that
section (2"-3"). Put the rest of the stem back up on the trellis. It should
look like a U with the bottom of the U buried. The spot you bury will
produce roots of its own from where the leaves were. If you do it now it
should be rooted and ready for transplant next spring. Just clip the stem
away from the "mother" plant, pot it up and you have a new clematis.

You can do this with lots of plants, I have a Miss Kim Lilac that did that
on it's own. A spot on a lower branch got caught under some mulch and
rooted!
