How big is your greenhouse? is a 12" fan large enough?

In general, the fan should go as high as possible since heat rises. That
also might put it more out of the way. Fans are generally placed on the
end walls (assuming your greenhouse is a traditional style for which you
can define end walls). Of course the vents for replacement air should be
on the opposite end wall so that the cooler air goes through the
greenhouse.

For safety reasons, guards are required on any fan within reach.
(another reason to put it really high up).

You might want to put the thermostat at crop level.

If this is a small greenhouse and you're using one of those cheap
plastic box fans, install it so that it's easily replaceable. The
plastic gets brittle in as little as one year and the guard starts to
disintegrate. Also, the bearings in the cheap fans aren't designed for
long term operation. I get an average of two years out of the cheap box
fans used as circulating fans, after which they just sieze up. The
commercial fans last longer, but not in proportion to the extra cost
(not figuring in labor costs to replace the fans more often).
