'Crimson Queen' Japenese Maple
i bought a nice 'Crimson Queen' japanese maple tree. i have read nearly
every website that i could find on google about this tree. what i need to know is will this tree do good in full to direct sun? every site i read i get different answers. some say yes they are hardy and can take full direct sun. some say they should have some sun and shade. the reason i must know is i want to put one in my front yard on each side of my drive way. that area gets full sun. i dont want to plant this tree only to see it die. can SOMEONE who has this tree in thier yard please advise me. can this tree take full sun?? thanks |

Crimson Queen loves full sun. Having said that, in your Zone it would
appreciate lightly dappled sunshine if at all possible. If it must go in full, blazing all day sun, please consider mulching a generous ring around the tree to the circumference of the canopy, and then water it well throughout the summer. You may experience some bronzing of the red foliage in full sun. the conflict is due to what "sun" means in different parts of the country. in
atlanta it is SUN!!! and I would go with some shade at high noon. up here in wisconsin I dont think direct sun would burn them. \ this all has to do with how fast can the tree suck up water to replace what is being lost to hot sun. actually the loss at the leaves is what creates the "suction" ... those leaves are very, very thin and it may be the loss is so high that the tree cannot supply it fast enough. then the leaves with dry out and crisp. if it isnt too big, pot it up and try it. if it is fine then plant it there. if not, move it to light shade. set up an automatic watering system for it. I believe that Crimson Queen can grow up to 10 feet with a spread of 12feet if left to it's own devices. Most Acer palmatums (Crimson Queen falls into that group) prefer a little shelter from cold winds and late frosts which would otherwise kill young leaves and can stand the sun or partial shade. Where temperature dips to -10C you should keep the base mulched to protect the roots. Plant it in moist but well drained fertile soil. As for pruning, only wayward or crossing stems when the tree is dormant. Most tall species are trained with a central stem as a standard. HTH. L |

i bought the tree from home depot. they dont really know much about =
trees. "Bob Walsh" wrote in message = news:3_Xra.416150$OV.421810@rwcrnsc54... I would call the nursery where I bought it. I'm in MN and I recall here at least the bark would split and peal = away from the trunk. Then the tree died. Wrapping the trunk in the winter was supposed to help. =20 =20 |

You do not say where you live, but I would not plant any Japanese maple in full sun, let alone 'Crimson Queen,' which is a little more delicate. For best results, plant it where it will get some morning sun, but at least part shade in the afternoon.
