Crocosmia -- lucifer?

I'm in Indiana and have a few of these coming up but got them in late.

I think Lucifer is the hardy variety? not sure. Can these be left in ground all winter and when do I plant more? fall or spring?

thanks.

we've had them here for quite a few years but it
took a two attempts to get them going (in Mid-
Michigan).

the first winter was too hard on them and they
must not have been down deep enough.

the second planting has been going on now for
eight years. we keep it well contained as they
can spread a bit too easily if conditions are
suitable.

i've tried growing them from seeds a few times.
it can be done, but like most other corms/bulblike
plants it's much easier to spread them by digging
up and dividing.

hummingbirds are all over them when they bloom.

i don't think it would matter much when you
planted them as long as they were down deep
enough, and perhaps mulched a bit if the area
is exposed or dryer in the winter winds. pull
back the mulch in the spring before they start
growing again.
