There's a lot of myths surrounding spiders. Check out this really funny animation on the myths surrounding the reasons people fear spiders: http://youtu.be/ufcGfJvApMM

It may be that some jumping spiders are poisonous, too.

Not "may be" -- all jumping spiders are poisonous so if you are a tiny
soft-bodied insect then you really need to be careful around them. If you
are human, on the other hand, virtually every spider has fangs too small to
pierce human skin and many that could seem to do so rarely and with minimal
effects. Thus, people who keep large tarantulas as pets. Sure, if you
actually live someplace with one of the few dangerous and aggressive
spiders, parts of Oz for example, you learn to be careful but no jumping
spiders are about to harm you even there.

I live in the southern US and black widow spiders are common here. I have
actually brushed up against them while on a tall ladder doing home
maintenance and have yet to be envenomated. Not to say that it might not
happen some day so I will keep my eyes open but their mere presence won't
keep me from getting out of bed in the morning.
