My deciduous daylilies recently put forth some beautiful fresh
foliage. But today I noticed that they're being ravaged by something!
The leaves look torn up, with ragged edges. Usually daylillies, in
my experience, are pretty pest free, so I'm puzzled as to what's
attacking them this spring. Could this have been the lawn guy with a
careless weedwhacker? Or is this some insect at work?

One summer we had a really bad invasion of grasshoppers and my
day lilies looked like yours (actually a lot worse).

Just how long do the blooms of day lillies last? They were already planted
along side a house I moved to last summer. The blooms only lasted a couple
days and then died. I did water them and gave them a bit of Miracle growth,
but perhaps there was something else I should be doing. I'm 22 and very new
to gardening. Any tips?

Oh and one more question. My mother gave me a very strange plant. It sprouts
purple flowers all throughout winter and then the flowers turn to leaves in
summer. Anyone know what it may be?

The reason they are called "daylilies" is because the blooms only last a
day. I think sometimes they last a bit longer, but not much. There usually
are many buds on each flower scape, so as one bloom dies, the next opens,
keeping the plant in bloom for two or three weeks. There are some
re-blooming varieties that continue to bloom sporadically throughout the
summer after the initial flush of blooms has faded. Stella D'Oro is
probably the most widely available re-blooming daylily.

Daylilies don't require much care. I usually give them a bit of fertilizer
in the spring and then maybe a bit more after they bloom. I don't water
mine unless we have a prolonged drought. They do benefit from being divided
every 3 to 5 years, but if your are blooming well, you probably don't need
to fuss with them.

Thank you so much! I was thinking of transplanting them elsewhere anyway, so
I can't plant something else at that side of the house that doesn't fade so

If your daylily bloom lasted more than the day, I would like to buy that
plant! Unless you are talking of the plant itself only flowering for a
couple of days. Daylily as the name suggests has a bloom that last a day.

A bouganvillia is a flowing vine whose color is actually in the leaves. The
flowers are tiny and cream colored in the center of about three leaves. It
comes int bright reds, oranges, magenta and has nasty thorns.

They look a bit like someone stpmped them (mine looked like that after an
encounter with the Cable Guy. Gr-r-r-r-r)
