Default seed in fall before spring crabgrass preventer?

Hello,

I have a question regarding crabgrass, and I was hoping someone might be
able to please help me out.

I'm located in Long Island, NY. I've had a crabgrass problem the last few
years which I've tried to control with post-emergent sprays. I had stayed
away from the pre-emergent preventers (like Scotts Halts) because I was
trying to get some new grass to grow from seed and had been warned that such
products will keep your new seed from growing. I understand that you can't
seed after putting Halts down, but how about before? In other words, I
seeded last October -- some of this grass germinated and was already visible
before the winter set in, but most of it isn't yet visible. Is this fall
2002 seeding affected if I put down Halts early this spring, or does putting
Halts down only prevent me from putting down new seed until the following
August?

Thanks very much.

Any grass seed that has not yet germinated will not germinate once the
crabgrass chemical is applied. If you are satisfied with the stand that you
have in the spring, then you can apply the crabgrass stuff without damaging
it.

I would consider seeding earlier in the Fall. I seeded with Kentucky
Blue grass on Sept 15 in Alabama. Most of the seed germinated by mid
October and the grass grew enough that I had to cut it twice before it
went dormant.

For Lawn Guy Land your are better off seeding in the fall as the soil
is warm and germination is fairly quick.
Apply your pre-emergent around the time forsythias bloom in the
spring.

After you sow seed, 90% will germinate in a few weeks else it will
probably rot or be eaten. Find out the best time to sow your grass
seed, and overseed every year. The crabgrass will be choked out. One
you put down a pre-emergent, it will last 3 months. Crabgrass loves
to take hold in bare spots in lawns, so get these areas filled in
quickly.
