Decorative bushes
 

I've installed a 4 foot white picket fence on one side of the
front lawn of my home.

I would like to soften the look by planting bushes that grow at
the maximum of 3 feet, they can be flowering or just evergreens.

Can any recommend the types of bushes that would complement this

You need to find some Marphistes bushes. They are available at any
reputable garden center, and are usually reasonably priced (about $4.99
or so for 1-gallon pots).

Their maximum height is 2 1/2 to 3 feet and they can attain that height
in only one growing season. They are evergreen, so you can have
interest year around. As an added bonus, they bloom profusely with huge
pink and white blossoms from May through September. Marphistes bushes
are drought tolerant, immune to salt spray, bugs, and most diseases. In
fact, their only known susceptability is to muiatic acid. But then, how
often to you or your bushes get exposed to muriatic acid?

These bushes sound wonderful... I don't suppose they would be good in cold
northern climates?

Sound too good to be true? They are - this is a post from a repetative troll
and a not very creative one, too.

What zone are you in? What type of soil do you have? How much light does
the area get?

I am in New Jersey, Zone 6. The area is sunny all day. I'm not
sure about what type of soil I have, but the adjoining lawn is
growing well.

Even if you don't end up ordering from them, the pictures and descriptions
are terrific. Don't get sucked in by all the newest varieties, priced much
higher than older ones. The older ones are fine. This catalog will drive you
mad and have you broke within 3 seasons.

Personally, I'd be sure to put in a daylilly called "Stella de Oro", even
though it'll die to the ground each year. It's one hell of a nice plant,
with a shade of yellow to die for. Paste this link back together to see it:

Josephine, get thee to Barnes & Noble and find a copy of Henry Mitchell's
book, "The Essential Earthman". No photos, but he describes tons of plants
which will do nicely in NJ. He gardened in Washington DC, and he's honest at
the times when he's recommending a plant that's not going to survive north
of DC. Great book, as are all his others.
