Okay, my lilacs have finished blooming and I guess it's time to
trim them. My question is "how do I go about this".

If you want to open the bush up find the biggest and oldest "wood" and remove at the
soil line. take no more than 1/3 of the wood in one season.
If you want to bring the height of the plant down, remove the tallest trunks at
ground level, or, cut back to the height you want. a common problem of lilacs is
powdery mildew due to lack of circulation inside the plant. thinning the wood helps
a great deal. BTW, trimming back can also be done by removing big bouquets of the
flowering branches. remove the spent panicle so they dont waste energy going to
