Ipomoea volubilis (Morning Glory)

Is Ipomoea volubilis (Morning Glory) an annual or a perennial? We planted
some seeds a month ago and they're coming up quite vigorously now. The few
references I've been able to find (in French mostly) indicate that they're
annuals but one says that they may be perennials "depending on location".

We're located at about 39 N 27 E.

They are not frost hardy and will be killed by any frost.

On the same topic, has anyone seen a Morning glory with Square flowers???
