Disabled Fern
 

I have one of those big indoor ferns that I got from Home Depot last year
on sale. It has about 4 major stalks coming off of it and stands almost
6 feet tall in a 16" pot. It did very well outside last summer and so so
after I brought it inside for the winter. I don't get much sunlight in
this place. Unfortunately, I think I brought it outside this spring too
soon. Most of the leaves on the stalks turned brown but there is still
some green in the leaves. There's one stalk that remains closed and has
a sickly green color to it. Maybe tomorrow I can provide a pointer to a
picture.

My question: What do I do with this plant? Can it be save by pruning and
how should I do it? Where should it be pruned? Should I just cut all
the dead leave areas with a scissors? Should I chop the entire stalk
event though there are some good leaves on it? I almost want to get rid
of it and reuse the pot for something else but it would be nice to be
able to save the plant.

Sounds like you didn't let it get re-acclimated to the great outdoors come
spring...or more specifically the UV rays.

You can cut off all the leaves that are completely dead. Then you can see if
there is anything left.

Put it in a partly shady spot and keep moist. If you can get full morning
sun but protect it from afternoon sun, that would probably be best.

Be careful you don't overwater tho since it is now using much less water
than it was when it had a bunch of leaves.

Maybe it comes back, maybe not. Maybe with that many roots down below it
will really pop in the fall and that would make saving the plant worth it,
no?.

Thanks for the advice. I shouldn't have brought them out so soon. All 3
of my indoor plants got like this after I brought them out.

Those all three look like they will be ok.

Just keep them shaded and be careful not to overwater since they will be
using less water until they recover.

Although, I am certainly not having an overwatering problem this week!

Good ideas. In spite of their delicate appearance, ferns are pretty tough.

I would certainly cut off all the dead leafy parts so that the plant
can use its energy to not repair, but instead grow new shoots.
Unfortunately, these plants do like mild temperatures, and do not like
the cold!
