ideas for annuals in semi shade?
 

I am planning my summer flowering annuals. I could use a few ideas for
a semi shady spot. Last year my zinnias and even nasturtiums were
reaching for the light. I am in a HOT summer region zone 8 in California.

If you don't mind a few tough perennials, try Hardy Gloxinia--a relative of the
pampered florists' plants, but with smaller flowers (orange, white or yellow)
and infinitely more ooomph. Spreads well but not rampantly, easily
translplanted.

Could you define what you mean by "semi shade"?
Is it morning sun with afternoon shade
or light shade all day long, (under trees, shrubs?)
or north side of house, pretty deep shade?

There are not a lot of annuals that do well in
shade. Here are some I use.

Coleus
Impatiens
Pansy/viola (usually don't make it past Mid July)
Begonia (fibrous, bedding type)
Browallia
Caladium (tubers)
Lobelia erinus
Monkey flower (mimulus)
Forget-me-not (cut back by half when they go to seed,
and you will get more bloom)
Baby Blue Eyes and Five Spot (Nemophila) native wildflowers
but will not get thru summer

May I inquire, as to why it needs to be Annuals? There are soooo many
lovely "easy to care for" perennials
