Cultural Practice Problems of Trees and Shrubs

From a recent University of Massachusetts Extension news release:

A new publication offered by UMass Extension titled Cultural Practice
Problems of Trees and Shrubs in the Landscape and Nursery is now
available. Often when there is a problem with a tree or shrub, home
gardeners and landscape professionals are baffled as to whether the
ailment was caused by an insect, disease, or some other factor.
Frequently, the primary underlying reason is improperly administered
cultural practices, often dating back to the time of planting. This new
publication addresses many of the commonly found cultural practice
problems associated with woody plant material in our landscapes, and how
to avoid such pitfalls.
This ... 108-page ... book highlights the many cultural practice
pitfalls often found associated with woody plant material in the
nursery, landscape, and urban forest. This includes issues with roots,
digging, handling, planting, mulching, trunk wraps, staking, watering,
fertilization, construction injury, and much more. The most current tree
planting guidelines are also included, in addition to 100 detailed color
photographs. It is written for professional horticulturists, landscape
designers, municipal managers, and master gardeners.
The authors have carefully researched the pertinent information for
all of the included topics, summarized the important details, and
provided references for each source at the end of the book. The intent
is to create a concise yet informative quick reference and to expose the
reader to the vast area of scientific work that has been performed. This
book can be useful to plant-care specialists throughout much of the
United States and Canada....
