Default Mums and marigolds by seeds?

Hi,

I've tried planting both mums and marigolds by seed in previous years,
and have never been successful. My method was to plant them in
garden, in May, Zone 8. This year I'd like to try again.

Have I been planting too early, or too deeply or what?

Could some who has been successful tell me their procedure?

Thanks,
BL

Every day is a good day when it's above ground.
