Trimming a Lilac

How far down the stock do I trim the flowers off when they are done
blooming? I have 3 lilacs and they all managed to bloom this year and I
wondered how to go about trimming so I get a good show next year. I am
inclined to just cut right below the flower but wonder what is the "correct"
way to do this.

TIA,

Heather

Trimming a Lilac

Prune just below the spent flower to the topmost twigs.
