The tips of my Iris are turning brown, I am in zone 7. Is it too early to
cut them back? I would like to get a head start on thinning out the bed.

Has it been six weeks since they bloomed? You should wait that long before
you cut them back to give them an opportunity store energy. At that point
many people cut the tops back to a fan shape to make the beds look neater
and remove the brown tips, but it really isn't necessary.

I broke the rules and cut my irises back to about 9 to 12 inches right after
they bloomed. Had to do this to make room for the daylilies that were
getting ready to start.

DON'T cut them back!!! The fans are making food for next years flowers, I cut
the brown tips off mine and leave them alone and I live in the High Mojave
Desert.
