Need suggestion for fragant flower in shaded area
 

Ok, I have an area on our property that's fairly well shaded. It's on the
side of the house, along a walkway, and on the side opposite the house is a
nice, long line of honeysuckle bushes.

This area really doesn't get much in the way of direct sun at all. Some
times it's a little dappled (late afternoon) but otherwise the light is all
indirect. It's just dark enough that the area will not grow any grass but
some weeds manage to pop up over there (ragweed, poison ivy, etc.) as well
as mulberry seedlings and honeysuckle seedlings. So it ain't dark enough
that nothing will grow. :)

I would like to plant a perennial along this walkway that flowers --
preferably one that has a flower with lots of great fragrance as it's right
outside the bedroom.

Anyone have any suggestions?

I've got some four o'clocks growing in shade right now. Nothing has
started blooming yet, but they are the same size as the ones in full sun.

Maybe a shrub would be good - some varieties of mock orange are very
fragrant and bloom for about 3 weeks or so in June. A honeysuckle vine will
grow up toward the light and if it can find some, it will bloom most of the
summer for you and be very fragrant. (These vines are different than the
shrub honeysuckles). (Some varieties are invasive so be careful).
Four-o-clocks and nicotiana are annuals that self-sow and they both can take
part shade conditions and are fragrant - only in the evening....Most
perennials only bloom for 3 or 4 weeks out of the year, so you might want to
plant a succession - lily of the valley for fragrance in April, maybe a tree
peony or regular peony for fragrance in late May, maybe some kind of lily
for late June early July, and some sweet-smelling annuals for late July to
September. Most of these could be planted close to the same spot.......

Lily of the Valley is another suggestion. These are hardy perennials, love
the shade and blooms are fragrant. There is even a pink-flowered variety.
Other good plants to try are Viola odorata, creeping phlox, hardy cyclamen.
If it's right beside your bedroom, I agree that you should try planting
night-bloomers too since that is usually the time you use the bedroom,
right? Four o'clocks, night phlox, nicotianas, moonflower.
