Post this in the BINARIES groups...

Pictures and other binaries are not welcome in ANY newsgroup that
doesn't have "binaries" in it's name.

I don't see the word "moderated" in the name of this newsgroup either. I never realized
that posting a legitimate gardending topic with a binary file here would cause so much distress.
I do appolgize for the huge inconvenience!

Try downloading that single post with a 14.4K modem... Then tell me
whether or not it's a big deal.

....and the rule stated below is a pretty commonplace rule across
UseNet.

"Moderated" means that messages are filtered before being posted.
Rec.gardens is not moderated, but it is a "text-only" newsgroup,
meaning that plain text is the proper or correct or polite or
requested method of posting. "Binary" groups are the place to post
picture or sound files. To post a (gardening) picture, send it to
alt.binaries.pictures.gardens, then post your question here with a
reference to the binary post. Or reference a URL if you have the
picture displayed on your own web space.

"Huge inconvenience"? Yes, it is. Not everyone has a broadband web
connection. Many also have metered service from either their ISP or
phone co. There are *reasons* for netiquette other than criticizing
you. Since you didn't appear to know the 'rules', informal as they
are, someone (or Some One, in this case :-) pointed out your mistake.

Don't let your fur get ruffled. Just post binaries to binary
newsgroups and enjoy the text in rec.gardens.

14.4K, ouch, I could see your point. However, the subject line clearly indicates the presence of a picture file. I am not forcing you to download it.
Again, I appologize for the trouble. That's the last I want to do to such a great newsgroup!

regards,
sparkie

Yes Tracy it would but I did not realize it was unacceptable. May I suggest you get a better news reader like Free Agent.
You can pick and choose what you want to download.

cheers,
sparkie

I'm not sure about everyone else, but I don't have
a newsreader that I can pick and choose which files
to download. (Or, maybe more accurately, if I *do*
have that option, I don't know how to use it, and,
since I have a cable modem, it's not an issue any-
way.) IMO, the main point here is that, presumably,
you're posting so that people will read what you
post. If not following 'the rules' means that less
people will check your post out, wouldn't the logical
thing to be to follow them?

Tracey
