variable speed mower?

I purchased a craftsman self propelled mower model 37711. It is
advertised as a EZ walk variable speed mower but I noticed when using
it that it didn't seem to vary in speed. I looked under the drive
cover and found a single pulley with a idler pulley arm which would
engage the belt when pulled by the control cable. This to me looks
like a single speed system, either the belt is engaged and you move
forward or you release the cable and disengage, am I missing something
or was this false advertising. Thanks.

If it is like my Lawnboy, you basically let the clutch (belt) slip to vary
speed.
Would be a stupid thing if it were a car but works OK on my Lawnboy.
