Ione Manzanita

At the URLs http://members.aol.com/geowrs/ione/ionemanzanita.html
(overview of growth patterns) and
http://members.aol.com/geowrs/ione/ionemanzanita1.html (close-up of
foliage) I've uploaded images of the rare Ione manzanita, which grows
in the wild only within the Ione Basin--an area roughly 20 miles long
by one to four miles wide-in the vicinity of the small, quaint Gold
Rush Country community of Ione, Amador County (and parts of northern
Calaveras County), western foothills of the Sierra Nevada, California.
The plant is restricted to harsh, nutrient-poor rock outcrops in what
geologists call the Middle Eocene Ione Formation (roughly 45 million
years old), and is a prominent member of a unique, world-famous
botanic association known as the Ione Chaparral.
