When is the best time to apply weed and feed to the lawn?
In Central Maryland Zone 6
Does the stuff really work?

Yes, the stuff really works.

When all else fails, follow the directions.

When in doubt, contact your county extension agent. Much better advice
than what you can get here because the advice is area specific.

If you've never used the extension office before, it's time you discover
it. A good public resource and "free", a gardener's middle name.

Very few lawns need "weed and feed," but millions of bags of this
stuff is purchased every year. Apply weed killers when weeds are
young and actively growing. A dry sunny day is best. Spot treatment
is better in that your grass is not "punished" and you are using less
chemical yet the weeds are treated.

Years ago, the procedure was to apply lawn fertilizer. Wait 2-3
weeks, then spot treat the weeds. The idea is that the fertilizer
puts weeds into active growth which is when the weed killer has the
best effectiveness.

If you use the weed part (most likely atrazine) and have trees, you better fully
read the label. Now is not even close to being time to fertilize in zone 6.
Down here in zone 8b, it is time in mid April, so up there about mid May. If
you use a weed emergent, you really should read the label first.

There isn't a good time to apply weed and feed and the stuff is a highly
inefficient and expensive way to control lawn weed problems. You will get
far better results if you attack the weeds manually or spot weed with a
broadleaf weed herbicide AS NEEDED - not a broadcast application. It is too
early to fertilize now anyway - lawns are still dormant across most of the
country. Depending on your weather conditions, you are looking at late April
to May.

You might want to read the thread "Pesky Lawn Weeds" started last week to
get more info on weed and feed products.

Not sure about the lawns in your area, but here in east Tennessee most
people have fescue lawns that go dormant mid summer. I apply
fertilizers fall winter and early spring. The grass (like most
deciduous) trees) feed throughout the winter although the green leaves
don't show it. But, I do agree with weed spot treatment. It takes me
less than an hour to spot-treat an acre of lawn.
