Has anyone any hints on growing orchids from scratch. I have one
bulb( I'm not even sure if that is what they are called) which has aa
shoot about seven inches long, how long before it will flower? I have
some others waiting to be planted. Can they be outside in pots? I
have been told it will be alright provided the temperature is above 5
degrees. Did anyone go to the 10th orchid festival at Kew Gardens -
amazing!

Are you sure it is an orchid? No orchid I'm aware of will stand freezing
temperatures. Is there a tag or some kind of indentification for this
"bulb"?

As Cheryl said, there are many orchids, including ladyslipper orchids
(Cypripedium acaule) that grow wild here in New England and withstand
freezing temperatures just fine. The original poster needs to know
what type of orchid she has before anyone can offer any cultural
information.

I beg to differ, I have seen wild orchids blooming above the Arctic Circle
in Iceland.

If you do a google for "orchid culture" you should come up with quite a few
resources that may be helpful. I have also just completed producing three
new orchid videos this past week that are very informative. Here is the link
for the information on the orchid videos:
http://happymoosegardens.com/orchids/videos.htm

Enjoy,

Bobby

Sorry, then awfully close in Rifstangi. What's the latitude on that, Sigvaldi?

66.32°N 016.10°W which puts it a couple of kilometres south of the Arctic circle.

Hi. I'm new to these newsgroups. I would like to know if anyone has
any hints or tips about growing orchids in the New England area
(Boston, MA). I am originally from the Philippines, and I grew
orchids all the time, and orchids are my favorite flower. But the
seasons are so different here, I would appreciate any handy hints that
any of you have.
Thank you very much.
Elsie

They're not too hard to grow. Consider, before buying one, what temperatures it
likes, and what temperatures your house will be heated to in winter. I'd avoid
ones that like really strong light, as well. Definitely do research on which
ones you want before buying one.

Most low light orchids do well up there. I had luck with Phalaenopsis and
Dendrobiums. I would expect Paphiopedilums to do well also. You could try
Cattleya if you have good sun exposure; we used to have some in our
university greenhouse in upstate

For better info. I believe there is an orchid newsgroup something like
rec.orchids. Look them up. They can be very helpful.
