What to plant next to picket fence?
 

I live in zone 7 (Georgia). There is a 35-45 degree slope away from a picket
fence on my neighbor's property. Mowing is impossible up to the fence. The
fence is about 20 or 25 feet long.

I want to dig up the area for 4 or 5 feet from the fence and plant something
there that would look nice against the backdrop of the fence. It needs to be
easy to tend and needs to stay in the outlined area. Mulch must not wash
away when rainwater runs off my neighbors property.

Any suggestions?

Have you considered reinforcing the slope with a garden wall, making a
series of steps? Then you can do what you want on each step, perhaps even
using sod if the step is wide enough for the lawn mower.

You might also want to consider dwarf jasimine, which will eventually make a
good, tidy ground cover that you can shape using shears or a string trimmer.
Make sure you don't use regular jasimine, which can get out of control.

Might be easier to terrace the hill. When the highway department
builds a terrace wall they build it 1/2 the height wide plus the wall
thickness at the top.

Build a small wall leaving gaps for drainage at the bottom of the
slope and plant up the area between with shrubs and bushes.
