Last night my baby dog, Rose was in some kind of distress. Her ears have
been bothering her lately, and Mike had given her the much dreaded bath

the
day before. So I took her into the bathroom and cleaned out her ears and

her
ears didn't seem right.

I put cleaning solution into them, and this upset her, but she was already
in distress for some reason, and I kept finding places where the carpet

was
wet. She kept going to her "safe" place, the bathtub and lying in it, and
then coming back into the livingroom where Mike and I were in a deep
conversation. At one point, she threw up and after I cleaned her foamy

mess
up, she went to the nook and lay down on the floor in son's room. We were
having computer problems and after I convinced son that we both needed to

go
to bed, I looked over at Rose and she was really sick.

It wasn't so bad as it was strange. Thick clear stuff like sinus or
something. So I asked her if she wanted to go out and she slowly got up

and
I let her outside. And then she refused to come in. So we all went to

bed,
and this morning I woke up to Sugar asking me if she could go out please,
and I got up and started to call Rose and there she was. My sweet baby

girl
had come back from wherever she had gone when she slipped out last night,
and lay under my bedroom window and passed on.

The vet says that this is a fluke occurance. That large and deep chested
animals, particularly dogs like Labs and German shepherds and horses
sometimes have something called twisting stomach. The stomach literally
twists on itself and the dog actually suffers horribly, and unless it's
caught immediately, they die of it by drowing in their bile. which is

what
my puppy dawg did last night just outside my window, as close as she could
get to the bedroom she's slept in for the last almost nine years of her
life.

I am numb and so saddened I am beside myself right now. I know this was a
little graphic, but I can't help it. Please know that right now I am not
only in major grief, but I can't get my SHOVEL INTO THE DAMN GROUND,

despite
all the rains to put her in her woods..........so just know that a very

good
dawg has gone on and as I look at Sugar lying there at my feet, all sad

and
searching the rooms for her Alpha mama, she will try to fill these huge

paws
of Roses for me.

thank you Brigitte. I appreciate the love you send my way. I can barely

contain my self at this moment. She was my slut dawg.....(position she'd lie
in as she slept) and I loved her quite a lot. My running buddy. The dog who
has spoiled me for all dogs in my life from now on.

I am very sorry to hear about your loss. I know how awful it is to lose a
companion animal. The sudden nature of the problem compounds the grief.
I'm sure she had a wonderful life with you and has left you with lots of
good memories. Try not to focus on the last hours of her life, but on the
years of happiness you had together. It will take some time to work through
the grief. Take care of yourself.

thank you honey. I am just devistated at the moment. She tried to get as
close to me in the bedroom as she could and only made it under the bedroom
window that I often write about and look out to. Rose always slept with me
in my waterbed. Always. Last night was the first time ever in her 8 1/2
years that she wasn't in my bedroom or in bed with me and Sugar the newer
pup and two or three cats crowding me.......yes, there are LOTS of memories
but her death has floored me. It was so sudden. Apparently there would have
been no saving her if I'd gotten her to the vet a mile away. This is a fatal
problem in deep chested animals.

I am familiar with the problem. As you say, there is very little that can
be done. Never the less, there is a tendency to feel a lot of guilt when a
companion dies. If only we had done this or noticed that. I had the
sweetest shar pei pass on after 12 years. She died of kidney failure and
suffered terribly for weeks. There was nothing that we could do. Still, I
was devastated and I am still sad three years later. We buried her in the
garden and not a day goes by that I don't think about that dog. I thought
we were going to lose another one this weekend. Our 8 year old has been in
the critical care hospital since Friday and they held out little hope. She
is doing much better today, but I have been sick over it. I think that
"devastating" is the best word to describe these situations. We decided
that the best thing we could do would be to pay forward for the years of joy
we had with our first dog by adopting rescue dogs. You never really get
over the loss, but you do learn to live with it, eventually.

High tribute indeed, Bill. I don't have a clue what to name in Rose's honor.
She was strictly a deck dawg. She'd lie on the kitchen deck, or on the
front "porch" (I always call it the dog run because it's just a narrow
sidewalk running along the length of the house) and the sad irony is that
Rose was probably making her way back to the front door to probably scratch
to be let in, but her pain was enough that just lying under my bedroom
window was effort enough. To make it more tolerable, she died while embraced
by the heavy fragrances of my Shenandoah, Shiloh and Yellow trumpet lilies
just behind the Bruce daylilies which popped open yesterday amidst the swamp
sunflowers that threaten to choke them out by their sheer height. My heart
is still heavy with her loss. I can't imagine not having her around. And
poor little Sugar.....next week will be the ultimate test when I have to
return to work and son is gone too. She'll be completely alone, and this is
not a dog to leave alone. She's a Lab/Border collie pup of a year that is a
bit vindictive and gets bored. Rose kept her company when I left them alone
for the hours I work. To see how she freaked when I let Rose out without
her is testimony to my struggles when she goes solo without any companion.
Hopefully her kitty, Piquito can fill the bill for her... I truely hope so.
She's the last dog for me for awhile.

And it just keeps on ****ing rains here, and gratefully, we need it despite
the saturated soils. I keep remembering droughts and am grateful. But I
still couldn't get my shovel into the soil to bury my baby on my acre today.
that grieved me no end.

My sincerest condolances on your loss Maddie. Just lost Little Bear to
tongue cancer in April. Renamed the Flavor King Pluot tree in his honor.
The Dapple Dandy Pluot which finally produced fruit this year is
Rusty's tree and Pussface, who's nine and starting to slow down a bit,
will get the Flavor Queen Pluot when her time comes.

I have lost two of my sweet old babies this last year. And even tho I know there is
nothing else I could have done I too share this overwhelming guilt that I should have
been omniscient enough to know WHEN they were going to die so I could be holding
them. sadly, I am not. I too sleep and go to work. my throat is full and eyes brim
over both for your loss and mine. INgrid
