Columbine Issues

Hi all,

I believe it was last year that I moved my 2 Columbine plants, this year
they are growing like nuts but never flowered. Should I expect blooms next
year after they are fully settled?

Also, and this could also be affecting bloom . . . I notice on the leaves
there are white track marks - something is living in the leaf, maybe between
layers? It's like little roadways going every which way. Any ideas on what
it is and how to get rid of it?

Thanks
LeeAnne

Don't know why they didin't bloom - perhaps too much nitrogen fertalizer.
Columbine self seed readily but the new plants don't boom the first year.
Maybe you transplanted first year plants? Columbine are long past thier
bloom here in SW Ohio. The "track" you see are cloumbine leaf miner. They
won't kill you plants and here we don't ususaly see them until after they
bloom. There is no good treatment that I know of, and anything that might
work would have to be systemic. I would just clean up the folage as it dies
and dispose of it. You can read more he

guess i lucked out so far. last spring (2002) i planted.. broadcast
practically.. a BUNCH of all kinds of perennial seed my daughter and i
picked out which she gave me and NOTHING CAME UP... nothing.. if it
did, the critters got them. then the spring of 2003 four or five
Columbine came up. BUT.. this spring, a bunch of stuff came up and i
was unable to identify them all. But the Columbine; it has come up all
over. Beautiful!!! It blooms here in late April and May, but as you
know, the leaves are quite attractive, and the blooms make them well
worth their space. About the time they were blooming, i sprinkled cor
meal around them and wonder if this had anything to do with them not
getting the leaf miners??

They were not first year plants, however, I wonder if the transplant shook
'em up a bit. They are big and healthy though.

I will be all over them next year when they first come up to see if I can
nip the little miners in the bud, so to speak.

Thank you for the information and link.
