HELP!! anyone know what kind of bugs these are and what i can do??

hello ;O)

i am a new plant lover. this year i have grown lots of fun things both inside
and outside my little nyc apartment. inside i have small basil, dill, catnip,
and majoram plants. they are lovely, resiliant and have given me great joy.
however, i have recently noticed some nearly microscopic tiny white worm like
creatures swimming around when i water the plants. they cannot be seen unless
there water floating on top of the soil (even then, the light has to hit it
just right to even notice that they exsist). they move around, squirm, and even
jump around attop the water. i do not know what to do... i don't know if they
are harmful to the plants (or to me if i comsume the herbs). i have no idea
what to do... please help!!!

i took some pics this afternoon when the light hit the window just right. there
are hundreds of these little things!!! i have circled some of them in red..
which didn't really show up (i don't even know if the pics will show up on
here)....

PLEASE.. if you have any info.. let me know.

thanks!!!

Can't tell what they might be by the pictures so it might be easier to
gather some up and run them to a local nursery. Guessing would be the
maggots grom fungas gnats, but I would think with large numbers of
them you would be well aware of the gnats flying about. Springtails
or one of the psocids can also be found in soil, a web search may help
you compare them to what you have.

I might try some Safer Soap.
Spray them good once every 3-4 days for a month and see if that clears them
up.
